What Is Earth Day?

Even though it's been around since the 1970's, some still ask:

"What is Earth Day?"

Earth Day is celebrated all over the world and was started by former United States Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to promote environmental stewardship. Over the years, specific issues may change but the overall theme is the same: taking care of the Earth. All types of groups and schools organize activities and events to educate people about how to help the environment. Topics include recycling, clean air, green living, sustainability and or course, saving energy.

Earth Day has grown so much that many refer to Earth Week. There is so much to do and talk about that it just can't all fit into one day so now events go on all week, often including a weekend.

When Is Earth Day

April 22nd each year is Earth day. Don't worry if you're not available on the 22nd because activities and events go on all month.

What Can You Do?

Many organizations and schools have events and activities for people of all ages to participate in and learn more about helping the environment. If you don't find an event that grabs your attention, you can celebrate Earth Day in your own way. We encourage everyone to use Earth Day as a time to save energy. If you don't know much about energy efficiency, now's the time to learn and see how saving energy can save money. Many people are already committed to energy efficiency but want to do more or want to help others and Earth Day is the perfect opportunity.

Earth Day is a great event to motivate people to live green and save energy and hopefully people will take what they learn and apply it to their lives all year round.
