According to Space.com, M-class (medium strength) solar flares were observed on July 3, 2013, by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Those solar flares were not aimed at the Earth, but the active region of the sun will be rotating to face Earth soon, NASA scientists say.
NASA officials also say that the sun’s normal 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, expected late this year. If a solar storm aimed at Earth is strong enough, it could create an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) such as the Carrington Event that caused interruptions in global telegraph communications in 1859. More recently, solar flares have knocked out long-distance telephone communications and disrupted electric power transmissions in North America.
Today, X-ray telescopes in space and radio telescopes in space and on Earth provide alerts that solar flares are on the way, but even that advance information probably won’t help avoid disastrous results to communications systems if a flare similar to the one that struck in 1859 comes calling, according to the NASA website.
