How to Save Gas When you are Driving

by Gail Browser
(Pittsburgh, USA)

With the increasing prices of fuel, we all want to save gas when we are driving. The unpredictable spikes in fuel prices leave most of us in a fix, especially when we need the fuel to travel and sometimes find the costs difficult to afford. There are simple tried and tested ways which can help you save a lot of gas when you are driving. Saving gas requires more than just buying a fuel efficient car. There are many other ways in which you can save gas when you are driving. Some of them are mentioned below.

When you accelerate, that’s when you car uses the most gas. You can save a lot of gas by trying to keep your journey smooth. Try anticipating the flow of traffic by the cars around you. This way you will know when you need to accelerate and brake and you can save gas that way. Excessive braking, especially at that last minute, leads to a large amount of fuel being used, therefore when you are close to a red light; try braking earlier than braking at the last minute. This will save gas when you are driving. Try avoiding the use of the air conditioner in your car. The use of the air conditioner also consumes a lot of gas.

So when you don’t need the air conditioner, avoid switching it on. If you try parking your car in the shade, you won’t have to use the air conditioner as extensively because your car will remain cooler. Rolling down the windows in your car also keeps the car cool and reduces the need for the air conditioner to be switched on. When you’re waiting at a traffic signal, it is a good idea to switch your car off. This saves you gas when you are driving. You can switch your car on once the signal turns green. Keeping your car switched on when you are waiting consumes fuel unnecessarily. Switching it off is a good idea.

Driving fast increases the turbulence and increases your fuel consumption as well. So try driving slower and you will save gas when you are driving. Also, you should know exactly where you want to go before you start your journey so that you don’t have to waste gas in trying to find the place. Preplanning your journey is a good way of saving gas when you are driving. Also, you can try to use a better route when you are driving, or you could drive during off peak hours. This way you will not have to drive through too much traffic and you can also save gas when driving.

Saving gas when driving has now become more important than before. Of course you can substitute driving with other modes of commuting, but since driving is the most preferred way of getting to places, the above mentioned tips are a good way to save gas when you are driving!.
