How To Save Energy At Home
- Lower Your Heating Bills This Winter!

by Sue Bond
(Los Angeles, California, USA)

Knowing how to save energy at home isn't something that just benefits the environment - it can also help every single one of us to save money on energy bills.

The truth is that you don't need to opt for expensive home improvements (though these will help!) - all it takes is a few simple changes to your attitude and habits to cut down on the amount of energy you're using.

Your Heating Controls:

There are a number of different heating systems in existence, so knowing how to save energy at home can depend largely on which system you use.

Whatever it is, getting to know your specific heating controls, and using them properly, is key to saving energy.

It's important to be able to heat your home to a comfortable standard without being excessive. Experiment by setting your thermostat to different temperatures, or test to see whether you can afford to turn it down by one degree.

Even a simple measure like this can help to save you money. It's also important to use timers efficiently so the heating is on only when needed.

Simple Changes You Can Make To Help Heat Stay Inside:

If you have radiators on an outside wall of the home, add reflective panels behind the radiators to help bounce the heat back into the room.

Close the curtains as soon as it starts getting dark to trap the heat in, and block drafts under doors with simple draft excluders (“draft snakes”). Keep the door closed to keep the heat in the room you're using, and out of rooms you aren't heating.

Changing Your Habits:

Although we may not want to, sometimes knowing how to save energy at home means changing our habits. For example, you might start wearing thick sweaters in order to be able to turn down the thermostat.

You could light a few candles to help make you feel warmer at the sight of an open flame, or do a little bit of indoor exercise to get your body heat up!

Insulating Your Home:

If you're looking for cheap and quick fixes, then these may not be for you. However, knowing how to save energy at home in the most effective way means insulating it to keep the heat inside during the winter.

Some of the top measures include replacing your windows, insulating your floors and walls and draft proofing.

Knowing how to save energy at home means taking an objective look at your habits, as well as the specific way your home is built.

Some homes could do with a lot of work to become energy efficient - although it's costly, it'll save you money in the long run.
