Home Insulation - Insulate Your Home Now To Save Energy & Money!

by Danny Rodgers
(Portland, Oregon, USA)

If you have really decided that you want to have a home that saves energy and money at the same time, it is a must that you check the insulation system thoroughly. Not only that this can be done easily but checking the insulation of your home is extremely cost-effective as well.

One of the ways to know whether you have a good insulation system is to check if it the construction technique and the materials used in creating the system can give protection during the cold and warm season.

The house must also control the moisture as the insulation system prevents it from leaking air. You will also get to feel if the insulation system works if you are comfortable inside your home. This means that you have invested in an efficient insulation system as well as properly sealed the air leaks.

Checking your insulation:

When checking for the insulation, see to it that you inspect the various parts of the house first including the crawl space, attic, floors, ceilings, basement walls, and the exteriors walls as well. The insulation of the house can be measured through the R values.

If your roof or walls has a great ability to resist heat, then this means that your insulation has a high R value. The Department of Energy said that the advisable R values differ from one area to another because of the climate conditions and the cost for creating a local cooling and heating system.

Although there are different insulation recommendations that were given by the DOE, the requirements of your local state may be lesser compared to what the DOE advises. Most of the requirements of the local states were based on the cost-effectiveness of the insulation system.

On the other hand, you have an option to have a customized recommendation to suit your insulation needs. The website called energysavers.gov has a so-called Insulation Calculator which allows you to have various insulation recommendations by simply putting your zip code and details regarding the type of home that you have.

Places in your home where you should insulate

According to the experts, there are at least 5 places in your home where insulation system is needed the most. It starts with the attic, crawling down to you walls, the floor, the basement, and your crawl space if you have any. For those who do not have attic floor, you can insulate the space right under your roof.
