Energy Guide

Consumers in the United States have access to an Energy Guide that gives some quick energy usage information for many appliances. It's a yellow card that is attached to the display models of appliances so when you're shopping, look for it to help you.

Photo of a yellow card. This yellow card (about 5.5 inches x 7.5 inches or 14 centimeters x 19 centimeters) should be displayed on certain types of appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators and clothes washers, whether the appliance is considered efficient or not. If you don't see one, be sure to ask a sales person for one. Sometimes people take the cards with them or the card comes off.

The card is easy to read and can provide great information at a glance.

You'll find out:

~if the product is Energy Star,
~its estimated yearly operating costs,
~the kilowatts it uses per year and
~how its kilowatt usage compares with other models.
