Energy Efficient Roof

Investing in a new, more Energy Efficient Roof could save a tremendous amount of energy and money for the life of your home and help keep your family safe and comfortable. It could also qualify you for an Energy Efficient Tax Break and other financial incentives.

New roofing is a major investment. You'll want to research your different options and find the best roofing for your home, climate and budget. We can help! We'll give you basic information on what to look for and show you different types of roofing. We'll even give you a free Checklist for Buying a New Energy Efficient Roof so you can be prepared when sales people and contractors come out to give you estimates.

Types of Energy Efficient Roofing

Some roofing, like membrane and foam roofing, are used more for flat and low-sloped roofs. On the other hand, tile roofing requires more of a pitch.

Note: Some companies specialize in only one kind of roofing while others may do a variety of types.

Metal Roofing

Not only is metal roofing reflective and energy efficient, it is very durable and stands up well to extreme weather.

Tiles

Clay and concrete are popular and sustainable tile materials. Some tiles can have an additional energy efficient coating added. If you have a tile roof, remember to check the underlayment!

Membrane Roofing

Long-lasting, easy to-install, can be a bit pricey but worth it. This is often used on commercial buildings for its durability.

Sprayed on Polyurethane Foam Roofing

Affordable and very leak proof because there are no seams. This is also often used on commercial buildings.

Look for Energy Star

This is a government-backed program helping individuals and businesses protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Energy Star Roofs meet strict energy efficiency guidelines and save energy and money.

Getting Bids For The New Roof

It is always recommended you get at least 3 estimates before making a decision. Take into account not only initial price, but also maintenance costs and type of warranty. Get everything in writing! If it's not written down, it's not part of the deal.

If you think of more questions afterward, don't hesitate to call the company and ask.

Ask The Contractor About:

Emmissivity
A Roof's Emmissivity is how quickly it releases heat it has absorbed.

Reflectivity
The higher the number, the more reflective the roof.

Insulation
Does the roof come with any additional insulation? Do you need to change what you have now?

Eligibility for an Energy Efficient Tax Break.
Energy Efficient Roofing and other energy saving purchases may qualify you. An accountant can help you with the details.

Use Our Free Checklist for Buying A New Roof

The checklist helps prepare you for the estimates and reminds you of what to ask during the estimates. With the written estimates and your checklists, it will be easier to compare the different companies and their products.
