Energy Saving Tips For The Home

by Sabina Mendez
(San Antonio, Texas, USA)

Why do we need energy saving tips?. Well, we all want to save money from somewhere and when we see our monthly utility bills these are the places we want to cut down the most!. So we will take a look at some very useful energy saving tips for your home.

First, you can start by taking a look at the thermostat of your home. You should try lowering the thermostat by a few degrees when your house is empty, or when its night time. Try getting a thermostat which is programmable. This way, the thermostat adjusts the temperature according to your needs automatically. Try keeping your furnaces clean & well maintained as well. They should be lubricated. This way if your furnaces are operating in good condition, there is a greater chance they will consume less energy and thus reduce your energy bill by a significant amount each year.

Sometimes you just don’t need to use heated water. Cold water works just fine, and has done for centuries. Small things like washing the dishes, doing the laundry, and even washing your hands with cold water stop the excess usage of heated water and bring down your costs. Another good energy saving tips is to do your dishes and laundry in full loads so that you won’t waste water or power in doing your work in smaller loads.

Get it all done at once! Instead of always turning the heating on it cold weather, it is a good idea to cover yourself up with warm clothes. This way you will save on a very large heating bill in winters. Similarly in summers, you can wear cooler clothes instead of turning the air conditioners on all day. Unnecessary electrical appliances should be switched off. Lights, the computer, the toaster, your mobile phone charger, all add to your electricity bill when they are switched on unnecessarily. Try switching them off and you will notice a reduction in your bills.

Another energy saving tip is installing energy saving light bulbs at home. The usual bulbs consumer more electricity than energy saving light bulbs. Look around in your local store to see if they have these available and replace the most frequently used lights with these bulbs to cut down on energy consumption.

Even when you shower, try not to leave the water on when it isn’t in use. This way you consume less water and are more energy efficient. Even more so, never buy electrical appliances that are larger than what you need. Freezers and refrigerators that are too large also consume a lot of electricity so try buying the right sized one for yourself.

We all need to learn to do our part for the environment and save a few bucks here and there. The energy saving tips for your home are generally easy, low cost or even no cost tips that can help you save a lot on your bills and even make your home more energy efficient.
