What Is An Energy Efficient Home?
Having an energy efficient home is more than merely just adding a few adjustments here and a minimal adjustment there. An energy efficient home is a belief & a commitment to a cause to help protect the world's limited resources.....before it is too late!. That means that in every way possible, your home acts responsibily as one that literally decreases the amount you pay on bills per month instead of one that grows increasingly higher depending on certain times of the year, like during the summer when it's extremely hot outside or during the winter when it's extremely cold and the reverse is what is being sought after. For a home to be energy efficient, elements of the house should be updated so that it does in fact save energy. The process of renovating a house to make changes of a more energy efficient variety can prove to be quite costly, but what it saves you will definately prove to be worth it. In addition to this, making renovations are generally also pretty easy. A crucial way to make a home an energy efficient one is to make adjustments to the home's "thermal envelope". The thermal envelope is every part of the house that shields the living areas from the outdoor world. This means, walls, the roof, insulation, doors, windows, weather stripping, finishes, air retarders, and vapor retarders. The traditional wood stud used to frame walls and the construction made to the roof can be traded for alternative methods that include Optimum Value Engineering, Structural Insulated Panels, and Insulating Concrete Forms. In terms of assembling the home, any one of these options can prove to lower the costs and amount of wood it will take to build the property while also saving room for insulation. Energy efficient homes also have higher insulation. Where a normal house could have an insulation of R-11 and R-19, an energy efficient house will have an insulation level of R-20 and could be as high as R-70. This is due to carefully applied fiberglass roll, foam insulation, and wet-spray cellulose that fill the cavities of the wall entirely. Air sealing is another important way that a homeowner can have an energy efficient home. Air sealing the leaks in your house will reduce the loss of energy drastically. In fact, a well administered air sealing can reduce the costs of your utilities at a rate as high as 50%. And this is by itself. Other ways to ensure that a home is energy efficient is through controlled ventilation and by following heating and air requirements. Creating the ideal energy efficient home is very possible, but it does take hard work and cautious considerations of what exactly qualifies a home to an energy efficient one. Those who look into the details of what makes a home energy efficient will be able to reap the benefits of a home that is "greener", a home that is less expensive in terms of utility cost, and one that takes less energy to live in.
