Energy Efficient Drapes

by Don Raddell
(San Diego, California, USA)

Drapes are a type of window covering and many people commonly refer to them as curtains. Many people place them over their windows to offer some privacy.

They can also control the amount of sunlight that they bring in at a given time.

Some people like to sleep in so they have heavy drapes that cover the sunlight in the mornings. Others love to wake up to the sun shining in as they start their day so they go with something sheer.

You can also layer drapes for a beautiful look that will serve you well. For example you can have a sheer panel behind heavier drapes.

You can open the heavy drapes and tie them on the side when you want to let the sun come in. You can also leave them in place when you want it to be darker or when you want some privacy.

Drapes are made from various types of materials including silk, velvet, and cotton. The look you want will often help you to determine the fabric you choose for your drapes.

You may not realize how much of an impact they can have on any room in your home. If you are trying to liven things up go with some colorful drapes but if you want to tone it down a bit go with some Earth tones.

Windows aren’t all the same size or shape so you will have to look around to find drapes that fit. You want to measure your windows in order to get the right ones.

Most people want them to be longer and wider than the window panes so you do have some wiggle room here. You can also custom order drapes to fit windows if you are having trouble finding the size you need.

Many people choose to buy materials and make their own drapes though. They find they can have fun with the various patterns and they don’t have to spend a great deal of money to get them.

You do want to make sure you hang the drapes securely with rods that are heavy enough to hold them. The overall weight of your fabric will determine what you need to use to secure them in place.
