Buying Home Appliances and Electronics: Freezers

by Harriet Bond
(San Francisco, CA, USA)

Freezers are among the most important home appliances. So what would you do if you your old one breaks down and you need another one?

The first thing that you should do, is dispose your old freezer. When disposing an old freezer you would need to follow certain rules and regulations.

For example, if you are planning to dispose your freezer directly then there could be a problem. Freezers, since they contain harmful gasses would require a certified person to dispose it, aside from certification it, it could also require for disposal fees.

There are times when the seller of your new freezer would be willing to dispose your old freezer for you. Of course, it would also cost additional but it would make thing easier for you. So when scouting for a new freezer, you can ask the sellers if they collect old freezer and how much they charge for it.

Size and Style

When looking for the correct freezer, there are things that you should consider. First thing, you would have to consider the size of the freezer you need, storing space and style preference. You would have to consider your shopping habits.

Do you shop in bulk to save money? Do you pre-prepare food, also in large amounts? If you say to both questions, then you would need a bigger freezer. A cubic foot of freezer can hold about 35 pounds of food.

Aside from the capacity, you would also have to consider the place where you would be putting you freezer. Your storing location would be relative to the style of the freezer. Your storing space can help you decide whether you would need a chest or an upright freezer.

Both upright and chest freezers have their advantages and disadvantages. A chest freezer can accommodate more food and even those foods that could not fit easily in an upright freezer. A chest freezer can be more energy efficient, since it keeps in cold temperature longer and they are usually cost less than upright freezers.

But the downside is that chest freezers tend to make it difficult to see the food stored. Usually, there are foods that can be forgotten and stuck in the bottom. Chest freezers would often have freezer baskets so you would be able to organize food inside the space.

Upright freezers, on the other hand, make it easier for you to see, get and organize food. it is unlikely that you would forget some food inside. They are also easier to relocate, since they can fit into the door. Upright freezers are usually higher than a refrigerator but smaller in width.

Additional Features

Aside from the storing location, sizes and the style, there are also additional features that would help you pick out the better freezer suited for you. Common freezer features would include manual defrost, temperature control, lock with key, freezer baskets or adjustable shelf.

There are special features for freezers, of course, they would be higher in price. Some of special features would include ice maker, fast freeze section, defrost drain or hose, freezer coils that would make temperature constant and other freezing features.

Other Considerations

For some consumers, being responsible would mean you would have to purchase environmental and energy efficient appliances. Using energy efficient freezers would mean that it is more environment-friendly. The reason why freezers are more energy consuming is because you use them round the clock.

When looking for energy-efficient freezers and other appliances, look for the ENERGY STARĀ« label. Aside from there are also different rating schemes, if you are aiming to have a energy efficient and green freezer, then look for appliances that have an A ++ or an A+ rating.

Freezers would have a digital thermometer which allows you to check on the internal temperature. Aside from energy-saving features, there are also tings that you could do to avoid an increase in energy consumption.

Things that you could do to save energy are making sure that the doors are closed, you would also have to make sure that there are no faulty auto closers. Warm air entering the freezer does not only increase the energy consumed to maintain the cold temperature, it could also spoil your food.
